Improve Fuel Economy |

How to improve fuel economy is on the minds of most Americans. Gas
prices are continuing to rise, making it more expensive to venture away from
our homes. While it’s true we’re helpless when it comes to the cost of filling
our tanks, there are a few things we can do to make our cars run more
efficiently, saving some money in the long run. The best ways to improve fuel economy are the most
obvious. Try using your car as little as possible. Walk short distances or ride
your bike as much as possible. In addition to saving gas, you’re getting
exercise. If you’re going the same place as others in your neighborhood,
arrange for a car pool. If you’ll be running multiple errands, try and save
them so you’ll be handling them at all at the same time. Try and shop at local
markets as much as possible. Sometimes just a little preventative maintenance is the key
to improve fuel economy. How is your tire pressure? This may appear to be a minor
detail but it’s an important one. If your tire pressure too low, your car will
have to work harder to spin those wheels. If your car is working harder, it’s
using more fuel. Instead, check your tires often; make sure they maintain the
proper pressure. You’ll also want to check your air filter. A clogged air
filter can cause also cause your car to work harder. Replace it if it’s too
dirty. Both of these suggestions are simple, yet can offer significant savings.
Using your air conditioner will also cause your car to use more fuel, so try
not to turn it on unless completely necessary. Roll down the window to cool
off. Don’t neglect tune-ups. The key to increasing gas mileage is
to keep your car running as efficiently as possible. Even faulty spark plugs
can cause your vehicle to consume more gas. Make sure your muffler and exhaust
are in good repair without any holes. Check your automobile’s owner’s manual to
make sure you’re using the correct grade of motor oil. If you can, check the
label for a brand that conserves energy. If you’re one of those drivers who drives with a foot on
your brake pedal instead of the gas, you may want to rethink your way of
driving. Constant starts and stops use more gas. Instead, maintain an even speed.
When on the highway, it’s more efficient to drive at a steady speed of 55 miles
per hour than 70 or higher. Use cruise control when you can. Don’t let your car
idle either. If you’re waiting outside while someone runs inside, turn off your
engine.
Try not to weigh down your car. Check your trunk and remove any unnecessary tools, baggage, sporting equipment and anything else that can cause your car to work overtime. Don’t leave heavy items on the roof rack any longer than necessary. In fact, you may want to remove your roof rack to increase your automobile’s aerodynamics. If fuel efficiency is an issue for you, you might consider investing in an alternative fuel or hybrid automobile. Keep in mind however, that just because a car is a hybrid doesn’t make it the more economical choice. It doesn’t take much effort to conserve gas and save yourself a bit of money. In addition to making sure your car is properly maintained, you’ll need to use a little common sense. Cut down on unnecessary driving trips and car pool as often as possible. We can’t do anything about the cost of gas, but we can try to save gas, and money, on our own. |
